It’s Official - I’m Below Average (But It’s Not All Bad News!)

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

In this month’s Mens Health magazine there is an article that gives some interesting facts.

I thought for fun I’d tell you them here, and compare them with my own results so far.

1) The percentage of his own body weight a fit man should be able to shoulder press - 40-50%

Ouch, I am managing *just* to shoulder press 50lbs, and I weigh around 140lbs, so that’s 38%. Not bad, but not very impressive either (but we both know my upper body strength ain’t great).

2) The size of the average guy’s upper arms - 13 inches

Ouch again, as I come in below average. Equally, most men are vastly over weight to fat might count for the extra here as much as muscle.

3) The average man’s body fat percentage - 19.7%

OK, now we’re talking. 13.8% vs 19.7%. So I’m considerably leaner than the average man. Great news!

One other interesting point mentioned is that you need to consume an average of 500 calories over your basal rate on a daily basis in order to build a pound of muscle in a week.

Which makes me wonder if I might just be undereating at the moment.

    Getting Burned Out

    Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Well I’ve been going to the gym now for 7 weeks in this challenge (and several weeks before getting comfortable with the various exercises involved). So I’ve probably been going for it for over 2 months now and I’m starting to feel burned out.

All this discipline. All this exercise. All this careful dieting is starting to take it’s toll.

I’m looking forward to the week I have planned off the gym, though I may make it two weeks. I’ll see how my body feels and reacts to the time off and play it by ear. One more week and I’m where I promised myself I would be so I’m quite pleased with how well I have managed to keep myself going and I have a number of plans for the second half of my challenge to make it even more rewarding, and produce even greater results.

But until then, I’m just going to be happy to get to the half-way point ;-)

      Week 6 Update

      Saturday, February 10th, 2007

Well, well, well - it would seem all my course correction is starting to pay off.

One more update before we reach “half time” in this challenge and I’m starting too see more rapid results in terms of fat loss. And whilst I haven’t seen any muscle gain, my strength continues to increase nicely.

You will notice that I seem to have lost a tiny amount of lean muscle mass though my calculations will never be 100% accurate so I’m not too worried about that - I consider that a slight measuring glitch rather than anything disastrous to worry about.

It *is* a shame there has been no noticeable muscle growth but I’m pleased to have lost another half an inch off my stomach taking me ever closer to that magic six-pack. In addition, I have managed to drop another 1% body fat in the last 2 weeks.

Working it out, at around 1% body fat lost every 2 weeks I *should* (if all else stays equal) reach my target of 10% body fat the week before the end of this challenge - giving me one week’s leeway to either slip up along the way or end on an even better result than the one I was aiming for. Either way, I’ll be happy.

Keep going at the current rate with the current effort and we’ll get there! What a great feeling.

Here are the stats for this week:

      Weight (kg) 61.2  62 -0.8

      Fat Weight (lb) 18.6  20 -1.4
      Lean Body Mass(lb) 116.4  116.5 No change
      Stomach 29.5″  30″ -0.5″
      Waist 33″  33″  No change

      Biceps 12″  12″  No change
      Thighs 20″  20″ No change

So what did I do differently this time? Well, I changed my gym visits to 6 a week - just one a day - having one of the week off. I did 3 weights sessions and 3 cardio sessions. The cardio I did an hour of rather than half an hour - 30 minutes on the cross trainer followed by 30 minutes on the exercise bike and this has led the greatest change in a 2 week period so far this year - a result I’m very pleased with.

Here are the photos which, to my eyes, don’t look any different (I’m going to give up posting pictures if they don’t start to look different soon!)…

This week's fitness picture Last week

Expect a big update next week where I’ll let you know how many times I have visited the gym (have I kept to the targets I set myself at the beginning of the challenge?), the weights I’m lifting, plus the overall changes to date.
